In this context, stability analyses become quite complex since there are a large number of uncertainties involved in the interpretation of the problem. This paper presents an analysis of the stability of a highway slope, located near the city of Guarulhos, in São Paulo, Brazil. The shear strength parameters of the soil and the stratigraphic profile were defined based on the results of Standard Penetration Tests (SPT). The initial factor of safety was below the minimum value recommended by the Brazilian technical standards, but did not indicate imminent failure. However, additional analyses which incorporated the influence of critical periods of rain and probabilistic analysis indicated that the stability of the section was unsatisfactory. Therefore, numerical modeling is shown to be a complex and effective tool for implementation of conventional analyses of slope stability.Los movimientos de masas en taludes naturales pueden causar grandes pérdidas humanas y materiales para una sociedad. En este contexto, el análisis de estabilidad se convierte en un problema muy complejo ya que hay un gran número de incertidumbres implicadas en la interpretación. En este artículo se presenta el análisis de la estabilidad de un talud de carretera, situado en Guarulhos, São Paulo, Brasil. Los parámetros de resistencia al corte y el perfil estratigráfico del suelo se obtuvieron con base en los resultados de ensayos de penetración estándar (SPT). El factor de seguridad inicial era inferior al valor mínimo recomendado por las normas técnicas brasileñas, pero sin indicar la ruptura inminente. Sin embargo, un análisis más detallado teniendo en cuenta la influencia de los períodos críticos de la lluvia y el análisis probabilístico indicó que la estabilidad de una sección no era satisfactoria.
