description The Trentino-Alto Adige region has been subject to several studies on bilingualism. This territory belonged to Austria until 1919 when it became part of the Republic of Italy due to its victory in the First World War. This event changed the dynamics of a traditionally Germanic region, where measures were taken in order to Italianize it. Despite these measures, the German-speaking group and the emerging Italian-speaking group remain culturally separated while inhabiting the same territory. One of the places where changes in the linguistic composition have been most evident is Bolzano, the capital city of the province, where efforts to promote bilingualism in the region have been heavy. Since the Second Statute of Autonomy of 1972, it has sought to preserve the traditions of both linguistic groups, making the region an officially bilingual territory. This linguistic distinction has led to the development of diverse research on bilingualism, such as the KOLIPSI I and KOLIPSI II projects, especially focused on the acquisition of the German and Italian languages. However, to date no studies have been carried out on language attitudes in this region, which gives rise to the objective of this research: to know the effect of language attitudes in the development of social bilingualism in Bolzano and its surrounding areas. In order to achieve this goal, a sociolinguistic survey, semistructured-interviews, a matched-guise test, participant observation, and social cartography were used, all of them supported by a fieldwork diary. The sociolinguistic survey gave a general idea of the linguistic profiles of the participants and the use of each language. The interviews revealed the perceptions and explicit opinions of the speakers regarding the linguistic situation of the region and the contact they had with the other linguistic group. The matched-guise test was used to investigate the participants’ perceptions and reactions to linguistic stimuli in German, Italian, and South Tyrolean, a dialect of German. The social cartography exercise was used in order to recognize the incidence of migration mainly in the twentieth century on the speaker’s perception of languages. The participant observation complemented and corroborated the results obtained with the other techniques, assuming that speakers may not reflect their attitudes when they are aware of being part of a research project. In the results it can be observed that language attitudes are favorable towards Italian and German from both linguistic groups, with a tendency to be more positive from the German linguistic group. This is the first study to address language attitudes of the inhabitants of the city of Bolzano and its surrounding areas in relationship with migration, ethnic identity, and linguistic discrimination. It is also the first study in which the matched-guise test is put into practice in Bolzano.

This territory belonged to Austria until 1919 when it became part of the Republic of Italy due to its victory in the First World War. This event changed the dynamics of a traditionally Germanic region, where measures were taken in order to Italianize it. Despite these measures, the German-speaking group and the emerging Italian-speaking group remain culturally separated while inhabiting the same territory. One of the places where changes in the linguistic composition have been most evident is Bolzano, the capital city of the province, where efforts to promote bilingualism in the region have been heavy. Since the Second Statute of Autonomy of 1972, it has sought to preserve the traditions of both linguistic groups, making the region an officially bilingual territory. This linguistic distinction has led to the development of diverse research on bilingualism, such as the KOLIPSI I and KOLIPSI II projects, especially focused on the acquisition of the German and Italian languages. However, to date no studies have been carried out on language attitudes in this region, which gives rise to the objective of this research: to know the effect of language attitudes in the development of social bilingualism in Bolzano and its surrounding areas. In order to achieve this goal, a sociolinguistic survey, semistructured-interviews, a matched-guise test, participant observation, and social cartography were used, all of them supported by a fieldwork diary. The sociolinguistic survey gave a general idea of the linguistic profiles of the participants and the use of each language. The interviews revealed the perceptions and explicit opinions of the speakers regarding the linguistic situation of the region and the contact they had with the other linguistic group. The matched-guise test was used to investigate the participants’ perceptions and reactions to linguistic stimuli in German, Italian, and South Tyrolean, a dialect of German. The social cartography exercise was used in order to recognize the incidence of migration mainly in the twentieth century on the speaker’s perception of languages. The participant observation complemented and corroborated the results obtained with the other techniques, assuming that speakers may not reflect their attitudes when they are aware of being part of a research project. In the results it can be observed that language attitudes are favorable towards Italian and German from both linguistic groups, with a tendency to be more positive from the German linguistic group. This is the first study to address language attitudes of the inhabitants of the city of Bolzano and its surrounding areas in relationship with migration, ethnic identity, and linguistic discrimination. It is also the first study in which the matched-guise test is put into practice in Bolzano.La región de Trentino-Alto Adige ha sido objeto de numerosos estudios sobre bilingüismo. Este territorio perteneció a Austria hasta 1919, cuando pasó a formar parte del entonces Reino de Italia, gracias a su victoria en la Primera Guerra Mundial. Este suceso cambió las dinámicas de una región tradicionalmente germana, en la que se tomaron medidas con el fin de italianizarla. A pesar de estas medidas, el grupo germanófono y el naciente grupo italófono se mantuvieron culturalmente separados pese a compartir territorio. Uno de los lugares en donde ha sido más evidente el cambio en la composición lingüística es Bolzano, capital de la provincia, en donde se han concentrado los esfuerzos para impulsar el bilingüismo de la región. A partir del Segundo Estatuto de Autonomía de 1972, se ha buscado conservar las tradiciones de ambos grupos lingüísticos, haciendo de la región un territorio oficialmente bilingüe. Esta política lingüística ha dado lugar al desarrollo de diversas investigaciones sobre el bilingüismo, con un gran énfasis en la adquisición de las lenguas alemana e italiana, por ejemplo, los proyectos KOLIPSI I y II. Sin embargo, a la fecha no se han llevado a cabo estudios que se centren en las actitudes lingüísticas, lo que da lugar al objetivo de esta investigación, que es conocer la incidencia de las actitudes lingüísticas en el desarrollo del bilingüismo social en Bolzano y sus alrededores. Para alcanzar dicho objetivo, se utilizaron la encuesta sociolingüística, las entrevistas semiestructuradas, la técnica de pares ocultos, la observación participante y la cartografía social, todas estas apoyadas en el registro del diario de campo. La encuesta sociolingüística permitió conocer de manera general los perfiles lingüísticos de los participantes y el uso de cada una de las lenguas en cuestión. Las entrevistas permitieron conocer de manera explícita las percepciones de los hablantes con respecto a la situación lingüística y al contacto con el otro grupo lingüístico. La técnica de pares ocultos fue empleada para investigar la percepción y reacción de los participantes ante estímulos lingüísticos en alemán, italiano y el surtirolés, un dialecto del alemán. El ejercicio de cartografía social se utilizó con el fin de reconocer la incidencia de la migración principalmente del siglo XX en la percepción de los habitantes acerca de las lenguas. La observación participante fungió como complemento y corroboración de los resultados obtenidos en las otras técnicas, partiendo del presupuesto de que los hablantes pueden no reflejar sus actitudes cuando reconocen que son parte de un proyecto investigativo. En los resultados se puede observar que las actitudes lingüísticas son favorables hacia el italiano y el alemán por parte de ambos grupos lingüísticos, con una tendencia a ser valoradas más positivamente por parte del grupo lingüístico alemán. Este es el primer estudio que relaciona las actitudes lingüísticas de los habitantes de la ciudad de Bolzano y sus alrededores con elementos como la migración, la identidad étnica y la discriminación lingüística.
