Summary:In order to determine the effect of two promoting substanceson the flowering induction ofmango cultivars, an experimentwas carried out at the Nataima Research Center during thesecond semester of 1994. Nataima is located at Espinal(municipality of the Tolima State) and has the followinggeographic characteristics: altitud aboye sea level420 m, average annual rain fall 1300 mm, average annual temperature 28°C. The substances evaluated were Paclobutrazol (PBZ) at 25% active ingredient, with a dosage of 32 mLlL H20 and 2% Potasium nitrate (KNO). They were applied solely or mixed, two application forms were used: foliar and drench to the soil. The evaluated cultivars were Vandyke, Haden and Kent, with five years of age. The statistic design used was split plots. The cultivars response to the treatments was a reduction of the vegetative growth, visible until the floral differentiation fase; the best response showed Kent cultivar with a length of 5,1 cm, Haden had 11,0 cm and finally Vandyke with 15,0 cm. Significant statistical differences were found between the cultivars with respect to the number of leaves produced with in each growth flush. Vandyke produced the highest leafnumber (l8), Haden (l3) and Kent (7.1). Vandyke has the largest number of panicles with 199, compared with Kent (24) and Haden (33). There was a significative interaction between the cultivars and application form ofthe flowering inductor regard the number of panicles produced with an increase of 31% when the application were made on the leaves compared to the soil treatment. With respect to the number of fruits produced by each cultivar highest fruit number had Vandyke (192), Haden (29) and 16 fruits with Kent. Also, the number of fruits retained by each cultivar was another variable with significant differences between cultivars. It was observed, when KN03 where applied, 71 fruits where retained, whereas with PBZ 67fruits, with the check 42 fruits, and with the mixed application28 fruits presented fruit setting. The mixed treatment showed a vegetative growth reduction but did not increase significantly the number offloral panicles and finally no favoured the number of produced and retained fruits.
