Description
Summary:The Momposina Basin, located in the lower Magdalena valley, in northern Colombia, is an example of an anastomosed system since the Pleistocene, which was developed as an answer to the progressive sinking of a transtensive basin.  The anastomosed system is controlled by microtectonic blocks, which are limited by faults indicating a differential subsidence with a mayor sinking of the southern and western blocks. Water sources move towards the southwestern part of the region, as a product of the differential subsidence.  The stratigraphic sequence of Boquillas core showed a fluvial succession with three main episodes.  Braided channels and lower flooded plains characterize the first episode during the Last Glacial Maximum, 21000 years ago. The second episode is represented by a transformation in the sediments with reddish tropical soils. At this time, there is a period of no sedimentation, within a dry environment, coinciding with the Younger Dryas period, at the limit of the Pleistocene-Holocene. The third episode begins at 10000 years BP and reflects the Holocene sedimentation with minor variations in the river dynamics, similar to present sedimentation at the Momposina Basin. Different climatic variations were analyzed, as well as ancient and present river dynamics of the Magdalena River, the evolution of soils and vegetation since the beginning of the Holocene. The presence of prehispanic groups was also registered together with the human intervention on the landscape and soils with the construction of ridge fields and canals to transform large areas and control flooding and to adequate them for agricultural practices.
