description This paper intends to account for the importance of methods for significative learning, for the teaching of geography itself and for the prevention and assistance of concrete socioenvironmental problems. For this purpose, the analysis of a pedagogic experience developed with high-school students is exposed, regarding the wetlands system located in Colonia del Sacramento city’s coast strip, in Uruguay. The analysis intends to show how the teaching of geography, with a reflective, critic and active approach, favors the development of cognitive abilities in the learners, which results in the formation of responsible, autonomous and critic individuals, capable of giving solutions and making decisions regarding concrete problems like those mentioned above.

Para este propósito, se apresentará a análise de uma experiência pedagógica realizada com estudantes de secundária, sobre os impactos devido à ações humanas, apoiadas de forma direta e indireta pelas autoridades governamentais locais e nacionais sobre o sistema de zonas úmidas, que faz parte da faixa costeira da cidade de Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguai. Espera-se demonstrar como o ensino da geografia em secundária, desde uma postura reflexiva, crítica e ativa, favorece o desenvolvimento de capacidades cognitivas nos estudantes, que redundam na formação de indivíduos responsáveis, autônomos e com capacidade crítica, capazes de dar soluções e tomar decisões com respeito aos problemas concretos, como o acima mencionado.Este texto presenta la importancia de los métodos de aprendizaje, tanto para la enseñanza de la geografía, como para la prevención y atención de problemas socioambientales concretos. Para este propósito, se expondrá el análisis de una experiencia pedagógica llevada a cabo con estudiantes de secundaria, en torno al impacto de las acciones humanas avaladas, en forma directa e indirecta, por las autoridades gubernamentales locales y nacionales sobre el sistema de humedales que forman parte de la franja costera de la ciudad de Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.
