(Texto tomado de la fuente)Emotional competence—fundamental to preschool children development—is influenced by several aspects of their social and family environment. Among these, parenting practices and maternal self-efficacy stand out for their potential on their development. The purpose of this study was to explore this relationship, specifically when maternal self-efficacy acts as a mediating variable. Therefore, a quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted in which 235 mothers and their, 4 to 6 years old, children, who belong to 5 district schools from Bogotá participated. Self-reported questionnaires were administered to mothers and an emotional competence test was administered to children. Data collected were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM); an advanced statistical technique for reviewing direct and indirect relationships between multiple variables. Results show a highly significant association between parenting practices, specifically communication, with maternal self-efficacy and emotional competence. It suggests that mothers who consider themselves more skilled in parenting tend to talk more with their children about emotions, scaffolding the recognition of emotional situations, as well as emotional understanding and regulation. These skills have been proved to promote positive relationships with peers and other significant adults. Study results confirm that maternal self-efficacy enhances the contribution of parenting practices to emotional competence, so it is concluded that strengthen these parenting skills is essential given the benefits for mothers and children both in the short and long term.
