description	Numerous methods are used to calculate the Index of Biotic Integrity (IIB) in diverse regions of the world. The objective of this work is to calculate the Index of Biotic Integrity (IIB), for an estuarine area in southern Brazil from fish community data and evaluate their fluctuations over the years. In this study, four ichthyofauna sampling points were established in the estuary "Saco da Fazenda", Itajaí-SC, in monthly samples taken during the period of May/2012 and April/2013. The samples were screened and the specimens identified at the taxonomic level of species. The value obtained for the Index of Biotic Integrity included 11 attributes, in four degrees of degradation over a year of sampling. Values were calculated and IIB classified into different levels to recognize its temporal and spatial variations. IIB was also calculated using historical data (2000 to 2005) to show the changes compared with recent field investigations. The results for the years 2000-2002 indicate a poor biotic integrity, being regular for the years 2003-2005 and regress to poor in the years 2012-2013.

Esse trabalho teve por objetivo calcular o índice de Integridade Biótica (IIB), para uma área estuarina no Sul do Brasil, a partir de dados da comunidade de peixes e avaliar suas flutuações ao longo dos anos. Neste estudo foram estabelecidos quatro pontos para amostragem da ictiofauna, no estuário Saco da Fazenda em Itajaí-SC, em coletas mensais realizadas entre maio/2012 a abril/2013. As amostras foram triadas e os espécimes identificados até o nível taxonômico de espécie. O valor obtido para o Índice de Integridade Biótica incluiu 11 atributos, em quatro graus de degradação ao longo de um ano de amostragem. Os valores do IIB foram calculados e classificados em diferentes níveis para reconhecer suas variações temporais e espaciais. Foi calculado também o IIB utilizando os dados históricos (2000 a 2005), para mostrar as alterações em comparação com as investigações de campo recentes. O resultado para os anos de 2000-2002 indica uma integridade biótica pobre, sendo regular para os anos de 2003-2005 e regredindo para pobre nos anos de 2012-2013.Numerosos métodos se utilizan para calcular los índices de integridad biótica (IIB) en diferentes regiones del mundo. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo calcular el índice de Integridad Biótica (IIB) para un área de estuario en el sur de Brasil, a partir de datos de la comunidad de peces y así evaluar sus fluctuaciones en los últimos anos. En este estudio se establecieron cuatro puntos de muestreo de las poblaciones de peces en el estuario del Saco da Fazenda en el Itajaí-SC, en muestras mensuales tomadas durante el período mayo/2012 a abril/2013. Las muestras fueron examinadas y los especímenes identificados hasta el nivel taxonómico de especies. El valor obtenido para el índice de Integridad Biótica incluyó 11 atributos en cuatro grados de degradación de más de un ano de muestreo. Se calcularon y se clasifican los valores del IIB en diferentes niveles para reconocer sus variaciones temporales y espaciales. IIB también se ha calculado utilizando los datos históricos (2000-2005), para mostrar los cambios en comparación con las investigaciones de campo recientes.
