description Abstract. Solid biofuels have become a valuable alternative for cleaner energy generation. This work aimed to identify the feasibility of using mixtures between coal, sawdust and cocoa husks for manufacturing pellets and the effect of particle size on their mechanical properties. Moreover, advanced characterization techniques such as Light and Fluorescence microscopy were used for identifying changes on the densification mechanisms due to the variation of raw materials. Cocoa husks exhibited a similar performance as sawdust for binding coal particles; compression ratio and final density of pellets made with sawdust-coal were near to values obtained with cocoa-coal pellets. Optical and fluorescence microscopy showed that coal particles crushed during the process as a result of the fragmentation stage included in the densification mechanisms; the images also reveals the incidence of lignin and protein content in the agglomeration process. The coal particles were brittle; therefore, it was necessary to add either sawdust or cocoa to increase the resilience, strength and durability of the final solids. Identification of the mechanisms taking place during densification is of great importance in order to establish the optimal conditions for producing biomass or coal-biomass pellets. The production of biomass or biomass-coal pellets might create alternatives for developing new renewable energy industries in Colombia.

Este trabajo tuvo como objetivo para identificar la viabilidad de utilizar mezclas entre el carbón, serrín y cáscaras de cacao para gránulos de fabricación y el efecto del tamaño de partícula en sus propiedades mecánicas. Por otra parte, Se utilizaron técnicas avanzadas de caracterización tales como luz y microscopía de fluorescencia para la identificación de cambios en los mecanismos de densificación debido a la variación de las materias primas. Cacao cáscaras mostraron un rendimiento similar como el aserrín para la unión de las partículas de carbón; relación de compresión y densidad final de bolitas hechas con aserrín-carbón estaban cerca a los valores obtenidos con el cacao-carbón pellets. Microscopía óptica y fluorescencia mostró que las partículas de carbón aplastados durante el proceso como resultado de la etapa de fragmentación incluido en los mecanismos de densificación; las imágenes también revela la incidencia de contenido de lignina y proteína en el proceso de aglomeración. Las partículas de carbón eran frágiles; Por lo tanto, era necesario añadir ya sea serrín o cacao para aumentar la resiliencia, resistencia y durabilidad de los sólidos finales. Identificación de los mecanismos que tienen lugar durante densificación es de gran importancia con el fin de establecer las condiciones óptimas para la producción de de biomasa o carbón-biomasa pellets.
