Summary:The concept of entropy may be defined as the probability that a given event can exist as a certain state information theory.  This aleatory attribute of entropy is useful in the information theory, and can be used to determine sediment sorting (0.0 = perfect sorting; 1.0 = poor sorting).  Entropy procedures were applied to the grain size distribution data from a Iitoral zone of the northern Colombian coast: the so called Ciénaga Platform. The values obtained, for well sorted sediments, may be grouped into three zones, with different degrees of sorting. The differences among these groups may be explained as the product of transport and sedimentation processes, due to: local currents, wave direction, exchange of water masses between the Cienaga Grande and the sea, and influence of fresh water currents that flow into the area.
