Description
Summary:This paper applies the Freudian axioms on group psychology to the conformation, functioning and disbanding of gangs of hired killers. The principal psychical mechanism is identification with the leader: the subjects substitute their own ego-ideal for this tyrannical figure. Submission to the group's norms is the result of this identification. A rite of initiation in one of these gangs is also analyzed in terms of totemism, and this leads to an examination of the father-function which here appears as an obscene and ferocious figure that instigates murder.
