In a remark from 1929, Wittgenstein claims that a logical notation is “the last expression of a philosophical view” (MS 105, 10–12). The thesis offers an investigation of the concept of logical notation in the Tractatus lógico-philosophicus (TLP) and an interpretative proposal of two aspects of this work that are consistent with such remark. On the one hand, the tesis argues that one of the proposed notations of the TLP: the TF-notation (ab-notation on Notes on Logic) can be understood as the expression of the logical view that Wittgenstein opposes to the philosophies of Frege and Russel: logic is not a science and logical statements are tautologies. Secondly, the thesis argues that Wittgenstein’s understanding of the workings of the TF-notation is grounded in his sign-symbol distinction. In the TLP, a symbol is a logical form common to a set of propopositions, while the sign is the perceptual aspect of a symbol. It is essential to a symbol to have a perceptual aspecto (there is no thought without linguistic expression). It is essential to a sign to have an intrinsic relationship with a symbol (withouth symbols there are just stains on paper and no language). According to the distinction so understood, Wittgenstein holds that in his logical notation the conditions for identifying the signs are identical to the conditions for identifying the symbols. If this is so, then the TF-notation is also an expression of a philosophical view, most commonly attributed to Wittgenstein’s Investigations, about the necessary materiality and temporality of thought and language.
