The results revealed that cognitive strategies were most frequently used by successful English learners. In general, students need to know more about the use of metacognitive strategies.El objetivo de este estudio es explorar las estrategias de aprendizaje de una lengua que usan con más frecuencia los aprendices del idioma inglés de una universidad chilena. De un total de 421 alumnos registrados en el programa de inglés, 185 respondieron un cuestionario. El método cuantitativo fue seleccionado para llevar a cabo el análisis a través de un instrumento llamado inventario de estrategias para el aprendizaje de una lengua (SILL por sus siglas en inglés) el cual es un cuestionario general (Oxford, 1990). Los resultados revelan que la estrategia cognitiva es la que usan con mayor frecuencia los aprendices del idioma inglés que tienen éxito.
