description This research, based on field data and complemented with numerical modelling, covers several aspects of the basin-scale internal waves hydrodynamics of the tropical Andean reservoirs. The present study shows that the presence of high vertical modes is not such a rare feature in typical Tropical Andean reservoirs weakly and continuously stratified, where the wind periodicity plays a fundamental role in the excitation of the dominant modes. We found that there is a strong link between the seasonal evolution of the basin-scale internal waves and the inflow density currents and we present for the first time, evidence of the linkage at the seasonal scale. This study draws attention on the need for a model which allows the estimation of the natural modes incorporating both the continuous stratification and the three-dimensional complex morphometry typical of some tropical lakes and reservoirs. In addition, evidence is presented from numerical modeling and for the first time, of simultaneous and different vertical responses with the same frequency in each basin that compose a two-basin reservoir. Finally, this work illustrates some of the differences that come up in the basin-scale hydrodynamics between tropical and temperate stratified water bodies.

El presente estudio muestra que la presencia de modos de alto orden vertical no es una característica extraña en típicos embalses tropicales Andinos de estratificación débil y continua, donde la periodicidad del viento juega un papel fundamental en la excitación de los modos dominantes. Se encontró que existe un fuerte vínculo entre la evolución estacional de las ondas internas a escala de cuenca y las corrientes de densidad de los afluentes y presentamos por primera vez evidencia del vínculo en una escala estacional. Este estudio llama la atención sobre la necesidad de un modelo que permita estimar los modos naturales incorporando tanto la estratificación continua como la morfometría compleja tridimensional típica de algunos lagos y embalses tropicales. Además, se presenta evidencia, principalmente a partir de modelación numérica y por primera vez, de respuestas simultáneas verticales diferentes y con la misma frecuencia en cada cuenco de un embalse compuesto por dos cuencos.
