Summary: | This paper inquires the urban planning and the environmental management, in relation to the treatment of the green spaces and the existing vegetation in the city, perceived today as urban nature. The analysis makes some specific references to Medellín, in order to illustrate a similar situation given in other cities. The first part outlines the importance that nature acquires in the dispersed city, from the social, environmental and the spatial organization point of view of the urban expansion. Secondly, the work approaches to the issue of the conservation of urban nature, its pertinence and its implications with respect to the design and treatment of the green zones in cities; raising as well the limitations that the formal managing of such spaces entails, from the ecological point of view. The third part of the document recognizes the social character of the urban green zones, and with it, the necessity to articulate and to condition the processes of conservation and naturalization of green areas based on the perception and acceptance by the citizens as the key factor in the success of projects in such sense. Finally, the work raises important criteria and actions for the definition of management strategies and managing of urban nature, like a new challenge and administrative objective of the city, not only on the scale of the urban landscape, but in terms of a greater ecological functionality of their green areas. |
