(Texto tomado de la fuente)This thesis consists of four studies that delve deeper into the concepts of self-control and behavioral patterns to evaluate the validity of a new mathematical model and the patternsetting program proposed by Rachlin (2016). The first two studies are with smokers, and the last two are with people who do not engage in physical activity but would like to start. The sample for each study was 48, 2, 6, and 8 participants in the order. Studies 1 and 3 evaluated the mathematical model proposed to describe discounting patterns where the immediate value of the option is positive, but the delayed value is negative and patterns where the immediate value of the option is negative, and the delayed value is positive. Studies 2 and 4 evaluated the pattern-setting program to reduce smoking and increase physical activity, respectively. In studies 1 and 3, participants assigned values from -100 to +100 to consuming a certain number of cigarettes (Expt. 1) or performing a certain amount of physical activity (Expt. 3) after a certain delay. Those in studies 2 and 4 underwent two different versions of the pattern-setting program. The results of the first study confirmed that there are negative asymptotes that the discounting model described. The other studies provide slight evidence of the applicability of delay-increase patterns (addcounting) and the program's effectiveness in reducing undesired behaviors and increasing desired behaviors.
