The lionfish invasion in the western Atlantic is alarming, it is the fastest documented and has caused irreversible alterations in the structure and function of several highly biodiverse ecosystems such as those of the Caribbean Sea. In this thesis I evaluate the effect of diet and energy reserve strategy on reproductive potential in the success of Pterois volitans invasion process in different regions of the Caribbean of Colombia. P. volitans consumes at least 250 species of reef fish and crustaceans in the western Atlantic, it is a generalist predator with a wide isotopic footprint and it feeds on what the environment offers it. The success of the invasion also lies in its rapid growth (K = 0.44 and ϕ ′ = 2.99), greater than that of other native meso-predatory fish that could be its competitors. In addition, it is highly adaptable to environmental changes, which is reflected in different feeding, growth and reproductive parameters among the regions of the invaded area, and it seems that mesophotic environments could be important for the reproductive cycle of the species. P. volitans has an efficient reproductive strategy, which includes asynchronous oocyte development, high fecundity (8940-18049 oocytes / female), early age / size maturity ((L50Females = 19.4 cm TL; L50Males = 21.4 cm TL; ~1.5 years), average population spawning frequency of 3 days / month and almost 2.4 million annual eggs production. It presents an income breeder energetic strategy of reproduction, since during reproductive events it continues to feed and mobilize energy rapidly, supplying the quality and quantity necessary to guarantee offspring. In lionfish, the diet quality influences the maternal condition, the energy distribution strategy, as well as the reproductive potential. However, the food plasticity and adaptability makes it take advantage of the environment's offer without affecting the energy strategy of capture, energy for reproduction assimilation and mobilization, as well as the gonadal products quality. Finally, control actions based on the results obtained for the Colombian Caribbean are suggested: encourage the development of constant hunting programs throughout the year, or at least very intense in the reproductive peak months, increase the catches of fish around L50 or less as well as increasing fishing pressure in mesophotic environments.1.
