Summary: | This paper takes a balance of the "state of the art" of economic research in Colombia. The author describes the institutional factors which encourage or inhibit free investigation in economic matters. He emphasizes the organization and evolution of university centers andresearch groups, and their differences from and disadvantages with respect to private institutes or research groups from institutions with greater resources such as the Banco de la República. He reviews the topics which are and have been of interest to researchers in recent decades, and analyzes the role of the country's most important specializedjournals. He suggests that, apart from the concentration offunds in the area of consul ting, the most serious problem is the inexistence of a true scientific community and of well defined and independent research programs. Thus, in order to strengthen economic research it is essential that this structural weakness be overcome. |
