Great tensions between the followers of some managerial collegiate practices, proper of the nineteenth century universities, and the needs for a rational management of institutions of high organizational complexity, such as the large Latin American universities at the onset of the XXI century, also arise. This article discusses these problems and analyzes their repercussions.La universidad latinoamericana se desenvuelve en medio de grandes tensiones y contradicciones que surgen de la implementación, por una parte del Consenso de Washington, y de otra de las demandas de recursos financieros de la Universidad para llevar a cabo sus tareas misionales. También surgen grandes tensiones al interior mismo del campo universitario entre los partidarios de unas prácticas colegiadas de gestión, propias de las universidades decimonónicas, y las necesidades de gestión racional de instituciones de gran complejidad organizacional como son las grandes universidades latinoamericanas al inicio del siglo XXI.
