Delimiting their species has been greatly challenging due to the use of highly polymorphic characteristics. This study addressed these difficulties through an integrative approach that combines morphological and genetic analyses based on the cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene. Three valid species were identified: A. magdalenensis, A. conventus, and A. chocoensis, with the latter being the sister group of its congeners. Furthermore, it is proposed to consider A. diquensis as a junior synonym of A. conventus, due to the overlap of the characters originally proposed in the description and the phylogenetic results placing individuals of both species in the same clade. For A. magdalenensis, three clades were identified, designated as clade A, B, and C in the Cauca and Magdalena basins system. Although A. magdalenensis shows geographical structuring, morphologically no diagnostic differences were found to consider them as distinct species. This holistic approach provides a contribution to the taxonomic clarity of Argopleura by achieving detailed and precise redescriptions of its species, thereby improving the diagnosis by incorporating new characters.
