This article evaluates the theory and evidence on the role of the distribution of human capital in economic growth. The analysis documents different factors that condition education processes and translate into a set of heterogeneous of educational achievement that shape the distribution of human capital. Using data for 134 countries from 1960 to 2010, the effects of the level of human capital and its distribution on the rate of economic growth were estimated by specifying an interaction term between human capital and the Gini of education. The results suggest that an unequal distribution of education reduces the positive effects of human capital on the growth of per capita income. This evidence provides key elements to explain why despite the expansion of years of schooling, education still does not improve growth prospects in some countries.
