description Abstract: A methodological framework for the construction of a geotechnical information spatial database or model based on statistical descriptions and the quantification of uncertainty is proposed. The framework overcomes limitations of classical random field descriptions by using a functional data analysis approach for the description and interpretation of data defined across depth. The proposed framework is shown to work naturally for the interpretation of cone penetration tests, while allowing for simultaneous interpretation of many kinds, and large volumes of geotechnical information. A case study in Bogotá is presented as an example of the methodological implementation. Results obtained with the proposed methodology show the capabilities and advantages of the method for the geotechnical practice. Particular attention is paid to the possible applications of the statistical description proposed to the development and improvement of risk-oriented urban planning in developing cities. The proposed method is intended as a complement to current interpretation techniques and as a way of improving the current geotechnical practice; it does not intend to replace soil exploration activities.

El marco metodológico propuesto permite superar varias de las limitaciones de las descripciones clásicas de campos aleatorios mediante el uso del análisis de datos funcionales para la descripción e interpretación de datos definidos en profundidad. El método puede aplicarse con naturalidad a la descripción de resultados de pruebas de penetración con cono, permitiendo la interpretación simultanea de varios tipos, y grandes volúmenes de información geotécnica. Mediante un caso de estudio en Bogotá, se presenta un ejemplo de la aplicación de la metodología propuesta y se discuten las posibilidades y ventajas que ofrece para la práctica de la ingeniería geotécnica. Particularmente, se presta atención a las posibles aplicaciones del método para la actualización y el desarrollo de políticas públicas para el manejo del riesgo.
