description Un estado de salud mental alterado durante la gestación coloca a las mujeres en un riesgo mayor de presentar depresión posparto. Las mujeres con depresión prenatal pueden sufrir problemas en su funcionamiento social, retraimiento emocional y excesiva preocupación por su habilidad futura para ejercer el rol materno; las distorsiones cognitivas evidenciadas tanto en los estados depresivos como en los de ansiedad, pueden afectar la capacidad de toma de decisiones de la futura madre y el seguimiento de las recomendaciones dadas por el equipo de salud. En consecuencia, hay un interés creciente de investigación sobre la identificación y el tratamiento para la depresión y la ansiedad prenatales, a fin de evitar una agudización de los síntomas durante el período posparto. Los efectos negativos de la depresión y la ansiedad prenatal sobre la salud de la madre y su descendencia, así como sus factores de riesgo asociados, han sido documentados en países desarrollados, sin embargo, para el caso colombiano el nivel de conocimientos producidos sobre el tema es muy escaso.

Women with prenatal depression may suffer problems with their social functioning, emotional withdrawal and excessive worry for her future ability to exercise the maternal role; evidenced cognitive distortions in both depressive and anxiety states, can affect the ability to decision-making of the expectant mother and the follow-up of the recommendations given by the health team. Consequently, there is a growing interest in research on the identification and treatment for prenatal depression and anxiety, in order to avoid a exacerbation of symptoms during the postpartum period.
