Women with prenatal depression may suffer problems with their social functioning, emotional withdrawal and excessive worry for her future ability to exercise the maternal role; evidenced cognitive distortions in both depressive and anxiety states, can affect the ability to decision-making of the expectant mother and the follow-up of the recommendations given by the health team. Consequently, there is a growing interest in research on the identification and treatment for prenatal depression and anxiety, in order to avoid a exacerbation of symptoms during the postpartum period.
