Las lluvias llegan y Ambrosio se lleva el féretro sin consentimiento de Gerarda, Gerarda nota la ausencia del ataúd y corre tras él. Gerarda convence a Ambrosio de poder quedarse con el ataúd y marcharse junto a los del pueblo cuando el río crezca. Ambrosio se marcha a proteger los cultivos, Gerarda saca las cosas de la casa y las deja en la carretera, vuelve a su casa y se encierra junto al féretro. El río crece y se lleva a Gerarda y al ataúd. |

Gerarda develops a dependence on the coffin. Ambrosio, her husband, suggests burying the body next to the other two, before the rains come; Gerarda persuades him and does not bury it. Gerarda continues her life with the coffin, eats next to it, sleeps next to it and dresses it with the clothes her son left behind. The rains come and Ambrosio takes the coffin without Gerarda's consent; Gerarda notices the absence of the coffin and runs after it. Gerarda convinces Ambrosio that she can keep the coffin and leave with the people from the village when the river rises. Ambrosio leaves to protect the crops; Gerarda takes the things out of the house and leaves them on the road; she returns home and locks herself in next to the coffin.
