It will lastly argue that social systems opposed to pluralist democracy, such as harmonicist models, haven't shown to be flexible or able to adapt to changing human environments. KEY WORDS: Democracy, institutional theory, political elite, political apathy, common well.Sumario 1. Las insuficiencias de los enfoques institucionalistas. 2. Aspectos deplorables en las modernas élites políticas. 3. Las falacias del crecimiento y el desarrollo incesantes. 4. La apatía política de la población como factor recurrente. 5. La necesidad de un enfoque basado en la noción del bien común. RESUMEN Este ensayo pretende mostrar las ventajas de la democracia en comparación con regímenes autoritarios y totalitarios, especialmente si se toma en cuenta el punto de vista de la población involucrada. También afirma que desde una perspectiva de largo aliento es indispensable contar con una sociedad que sea más o menos consciente de sí misma, aunque esa autoconsciencia crítica sea detentada por una porción exigua de la misma y pese a que las grandes masas son reacias a aceptar, por ejemplo, las consecuencias prácticas de políticas públicas destinadas a proteger la naturaleza. En este sentido reflexiona entorno al hecho de que sistemas sociales opuestos a la democracia pluralista, como los modelos armonicistas, han resultado ser poco flexibles y se adaptan difícilmente a entornos cambiantes, sin ser, además, en absoluto mejores que los liberales.
