Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women
having an incidence of more than one million new cases per year. Breast cancer still has high recurrence rates increasing morbidity and mortality of these patients. Objective: To determine the factors associated with disease recurrence in patients with breast cancer in patients attending in the oncology unit of the Hospital Universitario de Santander. Methods: An observational study with analytical retrospective cohort type approach. Descriptive
bivariate and multivariate analysis was performed. Results: A total of 361 patients were admitted. The dependent variable of the study
the recurrence of breast cancer was found in 22.38% of patients and mortality was reported in 9.70% of patients. The bivariate analysis showed statistically significant positive association between Stage III disease
presence of HER2neu
Chemotherapy and Adjuvant plus Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy. There were statistically significant negative association with variable stage IV disease
neoadjuvant chemotherapy
hormonal therapy and palliative treatment. The Backward methodology was used in the multivariate analysis to adjust the variables and obtain greater statistical significance. Conclusions: Multivariate analysis related to the risk of recurrence for this study was statistically significant for breast cancer stage III and has less association with the occurrence of relapse in patients receiving full neoadjuvant chemotherapy without interruption in their cycles
patients receiving hormone therapy and those over 70 years
consistent with data reported in the literature
