In this work
a two-tank hydraulic system has been designed
built and controlled using industrial instrumentation devices. Taking as a base a small-scale water treatment unit
two tanks were coupled in cascade in order to create a recirculation loop for water
trying to keep fixed the content levels at the output reservoir in spite of perturbations applied on hydraulic resistances of the system. Then
characterization of the dynamic behavior was performed and main parameters approximated by testing experimental data. An ON-OFF control strategy was implemented in an ALLEN-BRADLEY industrial controller. In order to be able to perform PID actions
a PWM actuation module was coded in ladder language such that a two-position electro-valve could be switched appropriately by a continuous law. Both
the ON-OFF and the PID controllers
shown good performance to annihilate changes in the hydraulic resistance. Nevertheless
the PID action was better in terms of actuation wearing avoidance
given its reduced high-frequency switching. This solution may represent a cost reduction in real industrial applications. Mayor characterization of the behavior of the solenoid were planted as future work for their potential application in industry. It applies the reference value even after applying disturbances corresponding position in the outlet valve thereby demonstrating better comparative performance 3
