The main lines proposed by the dominating discourse were the following: less state intervention and promotion of market forces; adjustment of domestic and foreign disequilibriums; commercial and financial penness, as well as flexibilization of the labour market, in search for productivity growth. The aim of this paper is to review different pieces of research, which have tried to estimate the cost of the so-called Washington Consensus, in terms of social restructuring and the quality of life of population.Síntesis Cuando en el marco de la crisis global del capitalismo y del agotamiento del modelo de intervención keynesiana se dio el renacimiento del pensamiento económico ortodoxo, en su versión neoliberal, el FMI y el Banco Mundial orientaron un proceso de homogeneización de las políticas económicas en los países de América Latina. Las recomendaciones que dominaron el discurso hegemónico se pueden resumir fácilmente en: menos intervención estatal y más mercado; saneamiento de los desbalances interno y externo; apertura comercial y financiera y flexibilización del mercado laboral en la búsqueda de mayor productividad.
