This work is to collect and analyze the research developed in the reinforcement of masonry walls with edge elements
and observe its behavior in a certain stresses generated by seismic events or lateral loads. The masonry construction system is based on the union of repetitive elements by a rigid material paste. The edge elements in structural masonry is located in the end zones of the walls with partial or full development in the height of the wall
the reinforcement bars is achieved with longitudinal and transverse steel stirrups confinement. The objective of using boundary elements is to improve the ability to flex and axial compression
and in turn provide to the wall with a level of dissipation of energy in the inelastic range as those set out in Colombian current regulations. The most relevant standards in design and recommendations on boundary elements reinforced masonry are listed below: Building code requirement for masonry structures (ACI 530-11) Design of masonry structures Part 1-1: General rules for reinforced and unreinforced structures (EC-6)
Design of reinforced concrete masonry structures (NZC 4230) Technical Standard Masonry (E.070)
Norma Colombian earthquake resistant (NSR-10) Masonry Standards Joint Committee (TMS 402-11 / ACI 530- 11 / ASCE 5-11). It can conclude in the actual work
that the most viable option for construction of boundary elements in structural masonry reinforced is one that is named "walls with edge elements based building practices with or without conventional masonry block units high strength.".
