ABSTRACT: Numerous factors including energy intake, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids influence reproductive function in domestic animal by means of their effects both on the hypothalamus-pituitary axis and directly on the gonads. Metabolic condition has been amply demonstrated to affect reproductive capacity. Development of adipose tissue in conjunction with production and secretion of cytokines and other proteins by fat cells are expected to exercise control over metabolic processes. In this context, leptin a recently discovered hormone secreted by adipose tissue appears to play a preponderant role in regulating appetite, energy expenditure and gonadotropin secretion. Currently the sites of action and potential effects of leptin on reproduction are being elucidated. |

Currently the sites of action and potential effects of leptin on reproduction are being elucidated.RESUMEN: Diversos factores como la disposición de energía, de vitaminas, de minerales y de ácidos grasos podrían influenciar la función reproductiva en los animales domésticos por su doble efecto a nivel del eje hipotálamo-pituitaria y a nivel local en el ovario. La importancia del estado metabólico del animal sobre la capacidad reproductiva ha sido ampliamente evidenciada en diferentes especies. El desarrollo del tejido adiposo junto con la producción y secreción de citoquinas y otras proteínas por los adipocitos serian puntos de control de diversos procesos metabólicos. Así, Ha sido descubierta recientemente una hormona secretada por el tejido adiposo, la leptina, la cual parece jugar un papel preponderante sobre la regulación de la toma de alimento, el gasto energético, y la secreción de gonadotropinas.
