Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: The demographic, economic and social components of the elderly population in the city of Medellin were characterized through a descriptive transversal study during 1997, 2001 and 2002. The purpose of the study was to generate information that would facilitate the implementation of plans and programs addressed to the city’s elderly population. The study was based on the results of the city’s surveys on quality of life, carried out in 1997 and 2001 on people aged 65 over, whose data were provided by the Administrative Department of Municipal Planning. In addition, a telephone survey was carried out on 637 elderly people, selected from the sample framework of the survey on quality of life of 2001. The findings reported a higher proportion of females (58%) in the population, low coverage of social security health insurance (30%) and a low level of education. It was found that old people experienced a loss of purchasing power of 65% during the time of the study.
