Metodología: estudio cualitativo etnográfico; se emplearon 100 horas de observación, en el momento del alta y 15 entrevistas a pacientes y familiares. Se garantizó la confidencialidad en la divulgación de los datos. Resultados: los estudiantes imparten indicaciones, por medio de mensajes, demostraciones y material escrito, asumiendo que el paciente desconoce su situación de salud. Dichos mensajes pueden ser olvidados, recordados o modificados de acuerdo con el significado que le dan los pacientes de comprensivos o útiles. Conclusiones: los estudiantes de enfermería deben aprender habilidades comunicativas que les permitan establecer una relación de ayuda efectiva con el paciente y su familia. |

Objective: To understand the meaning for a group of patients and their families of the communicative strategies used by students when they give directions for nursing home care. Methodology: qualitative ethnographic study. It involved 100 hours of observation, at the time of discharge and 15 interviews with patients and families. The participants were guaranteed confidentiality in disclosure of data. Results: Students taught indications, through messages, demonstrations and written material, assuming that the patient is unaware of their health status. These messages can be forgotten, remembered or modified according to the meaning the patients give to them, either comprehensive or useful.
