In order to contribute to the characterization of infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis virus in Colombia, and attempt was made to isolate BHV-1 from 716 nasal, vaginal or preputial swabs taken during a period of six months, from 480 animals transported from long distance to the cattle fair in Medellin. Samples were inoculated on MDBK cell monolayer. It was supposed that long distance transportation would induce stress with the consequence of viral reactivation and shedding. A total of 1044 attempt were made to isolate the virus including 328 re-inoculations. No virus could be isolated from the inoculated samples. In addition nasal, vaginal or preputial samples were tested from 38 animals from a herds with a make of abortion located in Magangue (Bolivar), at the north cost of Colombia among the tested their were 25 seropositive, but again there were no isolations. However three semen samples out of 4 taken from bulls in this herd were positive by PCR. Further research is needed to define the real effect of BHV-1 infection in Colombia and particularly to the characterize biochemistry pattern of local strains and its pathogenic behavior. |

Further research is needed to define the real effect of BHV-1 infection in Colombia and particularly to the characterize biochemistry pattern of local strains and its pathogenic behavior.RESUMEN: Con el objeto general de contribuir a la caracterización de la rinotraqueitis infecciosa bovina en Colombia, intentamos aislar el HVB-1 a partir de 716 hisopados nasales, vaginales o prepuciales tomados de 480 bovinos, en la feria de ganado de Medellín, bajo el supuesto de que el estrés del largo viaje desde diferentes sitios geográficos del país y el ayuno al que son sometidos estos animales favorecieran la excreción viral. Se hicieron 1044 intentos de aislamientos, 328 de ellos correspondieron a re inoculaciones o pases ciegos de las mismas muestras y en ningún caso se obtuvo evidencia de la presencia del virus. Adicionalmente se tomaron 38 hisopados nasales, vaginales o prepuciales a partir de bovinos de hatos seropositivos de la costa norte de Colombia (Municipio de Magangué-Departamento de Bolívar), de haciendas con alta incidencia de aborto. En estos animales el porcentaje de seropositividad por la técnica de ELLISA fue de 67%, sin embargo, tampoco en estas muestra fue posible aislar el virus; a pesar de que por técnicas de PCR, hubo evidencia de la presencia del virus en el semen de 3 toros seropositivos.
