ABSTRACT: To determine the relationship between the level of development of the competences of the managers of health services in Antioquia as well as the quality of the institution they conduct. Methodology: a probabilistic stratified random sampling by level of complexity was done and then a simple random sampling in each one. 112 managers constituted the sample. Four instruments were used; three of them to evaluate the competence level of the managers and the other one to evaluate the level of institutional quality. Results: the development of the competences among managers was found between the basic and inexperienced levels, showing a poor performance in their management tasks. Additionally, a high correlation among competences was also identified indicating that the high or low level of development of a competence directly affects the performance of the manager. The quality of the institutions showed levels of business development between incipient and medium, thus revealing some sort of functional units which are determinant in the business development, such as service operations, planning, management control, and marketing. Finally, it was shown that the presence of some competences in the manager positively impacts the development of the functional units. Thus the performance of managers has direct effects on the success or failure of the institution. |

Thus the performance of managers has direct effects on the success or failure of the institution.RESUMEN: Esta investigación buscó determinar la relación entre el nivel de desarrollo de las competencias de los gerentes de las instituciones prestadoras de servicios de salud (ips) en Antioquia y la calidad de la institución que dirigen. Metodología: Se realizó un muestreo probabilístico aleatorio estratificado por nivel de complejidad y luego un muestreo aleatorio simple en cada uno de los estratos; se obtuvo una muestra de 112 ips. Se emplearon cuatro instrumentos de medición: tres para evaluar el nivel de competencia en los gerentes y uno para evaluar la calidad institucional. Resultados: se encontró que el desarrollo de las competencias en los gerentes varió entre los niveles novato y básico, lo que sugiere un pobre desempeño en su gestión. Se evidenció una alta correlación entre las competencias, lo que indica que el nivel de desarrollo de una de ellas afecta directamente el desempeño del gerente. La calidad de las instituciones presentó niveles de desarrollo empresarial entre incipiente y mediano, lo que identifica ciertas unidades funcionales determinantes en el desarrollo empresarial.
