Summary: | ABSTRACT: The reestablishment of reproductive activity during postpartum period in bovine depends on the hypothalamic synthesis and release of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) and the recovery of pituitary responsiveness for stimulation to this neurohormone to cause differential release of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which produce follicular growth and ovulation. Few days after calving, hypothalamus may synthetize and release GnRH in small pulses of low frequency to stimulate release of FSH that causes the development of follicular waves but only after a variable time, it can release GnRH in high and greater frequency pulses to stimulate release of LH that causes final maturation of the follicle and ovulation. Mayor such as suckling and nutritional unbalance and minor factors like breed and season, influence LH release and can delay the preovulatory LH surge and the postpartum anestrus. Technical intervention on factors that control pituitary gonadotropins synthesis and release may reduce postpartum anestrus and improve the bovine reproductive efficiency. |
