Los grupos dirigentes del país, así como viajeros extranjeros y nacionales conocedores de distintos campos científicos, se interesaron en representar el país a través de numerosas geografías, estudios estadísticos, memorias y censos. Ordenar y poblar fueron siempre de la mano en territorios desigualmente incorporados al "proyecto civilizador" de los grupos dominantes, por lo que este proceso generó tonalidades de inclusión y exclusión, y múltiples conflictos, visibles en los diversos patrones de poblamiento republicano. "La Colombia civilizada" debía reducir y cristianizar a "la Colombia salvaje" y someterla a sus estilos de vida y a sus tradicionales fonnas civilizatorias, en opinión de los dirigentes nacionales. Las geografías se constituyeron así en representaciones del territorio y de sus gentes, no exentas de distorsiones, representaciones selectivas y silencios sobre "territorios periféricos, desérticos y lejanos". |

The leading groups of the country, as well as foreign and national travelers familiar with different scientific fields, were interested in representing the country through numerous geographies, statistical studies, reports and censuses. Ordering and populating have always gone hand in hand in territories unevenly incorporated into the "civilizing project" of the dominant groups, so this process generated shades of inclusion and exclusion, and multiple conflicts, visible in the various patterns of republican settlement. "Civilized Colombia" had to reduce and Christianize "savage Colombia" and subject it to its lifestyles and its traditional forms of civilization, in the opinion of the national leaders.
