Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: To evaluate the level of knowledge acquired by the users of the Project Actions of information, education and communication towards sexual and reproductive health for Medellin, in the matter of proper use of condoms, knowledge of contraceptive methods, and identification, prevention and formal complaints regarding sexual violence. Methods: Mixed type study, quanti-qualitative character. The quantitative component was done with a test application, before and after a representative informative experience of the Project; it had a sample by convenience of 299 people. A qualitative approach of ethnographic type was also carried out, through six interviews in depth to users of the Project. Results: The knowledge of condom is almost universal (98.3% and 99% in pre and post), although incoherencies appear on its proper use. The most known contraceptive methods are condoms and pills. The subdermal levonorgestrel implants and the emergency method exhibit a low percentage of knowledge. The use of condom as best way to protect against sexually transmissible diseases (STDs) is wellknown, although a 12% in post-test continue considering that having a long-term relationship is the best method of protection. On sexual violence matters, is where minor changes of knowledge appear, which is associated to the socio-cultural legitimating of violence and the lack of credibility in the formal complaints. The informative intervention through the activities of the Project was evaluated positively, standing out the conversation with the representatives (called visitadoras) and the free sample condom and the booklet as the strategies of greater resembling. Conclusions: The intervention of the Project is effective with respect to the increase of the knowledge of users in a 10% to 15% in all the analyzed variables. The qualitative approach demonstrated the mediation of cultural and subjective aspects in the knowledge acquisition and the behaviors of protection in sexual and reproductive health. With respect to the knowledge and beliefs on sexual violence, variations did not appear immediately after receiving the information. This indicates the necessity to investigate which educative strategies are effective to sensitize the citizenship in the prevention of all type of sexual violence.
