ABSTRACT: Several factors influence dental cosmetics. Among them are: individual dental proportions, relationship between lips and dental structures (contact, absence of contact, or coverage), different types of smiles (high, medium or low) and number of teeth exposed in smiling, etc. This is a descriptive-correlational study with a sample of 87 students (male and female in different proportions) 18 to 30 years of age from the Universidad de Antioquia, School of Dentistry. The "golden" proportions were not met in the majority of the subjects studied in the sample, either vertically nor horizontally. The parallelism relationship and the absence of contact between the upper incisal edge and the lower lip were the most frequently found; the former 74.71% and the latter 67.81%. Regarding the types of smile. high, medium and low; the medium smile was most frequent (58.62%). The highest number of teeth exposed in smiling is 10 (49.42%), followed by the exposure of 12 or more teeth (40.22%). The most frequent clinical parameters can be considered as a guide to establish a typical or average smile and should not be interpreted as rigid cosmetic rules. Entre ellos se pueden mencionar: las proporciones dentarias individuales, la relación de los labios con las estructuras dentarias (contacto, no contacto o cobertura), los diferentes tipos de sonrisa (alta, media o baja) y el número de dientes expuestos durante la sonrisa, entre otros. Esta es una investigación de tipo descriptivo-correlacional para la cual se seleccionaron ochenta y siete estudiantes (hombres y mujeres en desigual proporción) de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad de Antioquia, con una edad entre los dieciocho (18) y treinta (30) años. El gran porcentaje de los sujetos estudiados no cumplen con las proporciones “Doradas", tanto en sentido vertical como horizontal. La relación de paralelismo y ausencia de contacto entre los bordes incisales superiores y el labio inferior fueron las más frecuentes con un 74.71% y 67.81%, respectivamente. En cuanto a los tipos de Sonrisa: alta, media y baja; la media correspondió al 58.62%, siendo la más frecuente de las tres. El mayor número de dientes expuestos durante la sonrisa es de diez (10), que representa el 49.42% de la muestra; seguido por la exposición de doce (12) y más dientes que se presentó en el 40.22%. La mayor frecuencia de parámetros clínicos puede ser considerada como una guía para establecer una sonrisa típica o promedio y no debe ser interpretada como reglas cosméticas rígidas.
