Summary: | ABSTRACT: The staining technique for the Nucleolar Organizer Regions using silver nitrate known as AgNORs stain is frequently used as a highly efficient tumor marker in human pathology and with less frequency in veterinarian pathology. The purpose of this study is to use AgNORs stain as a new technique to diagnosticate canine breast neoplasias which are consider to be highly frequent in this species. There were a total of 55 samples used in this study. These samples were obtained from the animal pathology laboratory archives and from the veterinarian center of the University of Antioquia as well as other local clinics in the city of Medellín, Colombia. The 55 samples were analyzed using the Hematoxylin- Eosin stain technique and further classified histopathologically in accordance with guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) thus: Tubular Adenocarcinoma (12), Solid Adenocarcinoma (13), Papillary Adenocarcinoma (9), Mixed Benign Breast tumors (6) and malignant (15) were diagnosed. A second cut (4 um) from each sample was stained with silver nitrate to label the AgNORs. The morphometric posterior analysis was performed using the automatic image analyzer (AIA). The results were statistically analyzed using the variance analysis (ANOVA) with statistically p<0.05 value aditionally Fischer (F) test was used. The statistics analysis showed that tubulars adenocarcinoma have a nuclear area bigger significant statistically (p<0.05) compared with papilars and solid, while the papilars have AgNORs area smaller than the others types. The benign breast mixed tumors have nuclear area and AgNORs area smaller significant statistically (p<0.05) than malignant breast mixed tumors. Both tumors malignant and benign mixed did not present statistics difference significant with relation to AgNORs numbers. |
