Description
Summary:ABSTRACT: Irregular antibodies are one of the main complications of blood transfusion. Objective To determine the prevalence of irregular antibodies in blood receptors from a clinic in Medellín, Colombia during the period of June 2007 to June 2010 and its association with demographic, clinical and hematological features. Materials and methods Cross sectional study in 6420 blood receptors. The information was collected and analyzed in SPSS 18 through summary measures, frequencies, confidence intervals and nonparametric statistics. Results The prevalence of irregular antibodies was 1.1%, there was a 14.8% anti E, 9.8% anti D and 4.9% anti Kell, the frequency of anti C, anti c, anti S, anti Lea-, anti M and anti Fya was less than 4%. There was no difference in antibody prevalence by age, sex, diagnosis, ABO group and number of transfusions, there was an association with Rh and crossmatch test. Conclusions The prevalence of irregular antibodies was low and it had no association with the demographic and clinical characteristics of the receptors. Key words Antibodies, irregular, blood transfusion. Key words: Antibodies, irregular, blood transfusion.
