However, a microorganism must be free of pathogenic factors to be recognized as a probiotic. In the case of Bacillus strains, enterotoxins (nheA, nheB, nheC, hblA, hblC, hblD, cytK y entFM) and cereulide synthase (ces), in addition to antibiotic resistance genes must be absent. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the biosafety of a Bacillus megaterium M4 strain by sequencing the complete genome, followed by annotation in the virulence factor database (VFDB) and ResFinder. In the current study, virulence-associated genes and resistance-acquired genes were not identified neither of them affected the biosafety of the strain, nor were any of the genes associated with antibiotic resistance. Considering the results obtained, the Priestia megaterium M4 strain is considered a possible candidate for use as a probiotic for Nile tilapia culture.
