Summary: | Related to the need to change the city’s image, related to major sports events held in Rio de Janeiro, especially the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, new public policies have been implemented to improve security and mobility. Important changes have been made in the favelas with the help of the Police Peace Units (PPUs) related to security and major mobility construction works. This new environment has had a strong influence on a new process associated with the development of tourism in these areas. It is an activity widely used to increase cities’ income and it is evident that tourism in the favelas follows a similar process to what happens in traditional tourist cities, such as the matization and scenarization based on models existing in other well-known, traditional tourist areas. |
