It has been shown that students present various difficulties with the spatial geometric thinking competence, which focuses on the appropriation of concepts and geometric figures applied to the creation of compound designs.In inquiring about this type of thinking, Hoffer and Van Hiele have developed two theories that contribute to the understanding of geometry respectively. Hence, a diagnostic instrument was formulated that obeys the understanding skills of Hoffer's geometry and the teaching levels of van Hiele's geometry; in order to identify geometric concepts, geometric transformations and creation of flat compound designs, and thus determine the level of development of thought in the study population.Esta investigación se desarrolló a partir de la reflexión de nuestro que hacer como docentes puntualmente en el colegio distrital Restrepo Millán ubicado en la localidad Rafael Uribe Uribe de la ciudad de Bogotá, con la población de estudiantes de grado décimo pertenecientes a la profundización de Diseño. Se ha evidenciado que los estudiantes presentan varias dificultades con la competencia de pensamiento geométrico espacial, el cual se enfoca en la apropiación de conceptos y figuras geométricas aplicadas a la creación de diseños compuestos.Al indagar sobre este tipo de pensamiento, Hoffer y Van Hiele han desarrollado dos teorías que contribuyen a la comprensión de la geometría respectivamente.
