En la actualidad solo se cuenta con dos antiparasitarios para tratar esta patología, su eficacia varía según la fase en que se encuentre la enfermedad y los reportes evidencian efectos secundarios graves en los pacientes tratados, lo que destaca la necesidad de una mayor investigación y desarrollo de nuevos tratamientos de origen vegetal, con moléculas que contengan potencial y acción biológica, ya que sus compuestos contienen propiedades medicinales, y fitoquímicas importantes.
