Summary:This research work addresses the use of the cell phone as a consumer object surrounded by different cultural symbols that can interfere with the construction of identity and social relationships of the subjects, which is known as symbolic consumption. The research objectives are: to identify the type of relationship between the use and consumption of cell phones and the academic performance of elementary school students; identify the reasons why this population uses these devices at such a young age; determine if a relationship of this type of consumption and the construction of identity and social relationships is woven and, finally, discuss the possibility of using the smartphone as a didactic tool in classrooms.
