One of the most representative industrial activities in the Colombian economy is the fur tanning sector, with a 2.17% share of manufacturing GDP, grouped mostly in SMEs through the export of wet-blue leather generating revenues of $70 million per year. However, improper exploitation of the activity, as well as manufacturing practices that are not aware of the environmental impact, has consequences on bodies of water in the upper and middle basin of the Bogota River, of vital environmental and cultural importance. This article aims to provide an overview of the process, its environmental impact, as well as some of the alternatives for its present and future remediation.El agua es un recurso vital para los seres vivos en el planeta, su empleo cotidiano abarca las diferentes actividades antropomórficas, es empleada como medio de reacción y/o materia prima en diversos procesos industriales y agropecuarios. Una de las actividades industriales más representativas en la economía colombiana es el sector del curtido de pieles, con una participación del 2,17% en el PIB manufacturero, agrupados en su mayoría en PYMES por medio de la exportación del cuero tipo wet-blue generando ingresos de 70 millones de dólares al año. Sin embargo, una explotación indebida de la actividad, así como prácticas manufactureras poco consientes del impacto ambiental, tiene consecuencias sobre cuerpos de agua en la cuenca alta y media del río Bogotá, de vital importancia ambiental y cultural.
