An alpha value of 0.05 was considered.Results: the percentage of people with fear to dental attendance was 48.2%, 55.6% of women felt fear to their dentist and 28.2% of the population reported having ever missed dental appointments for the fear that this will generate. The syringe of anesthesia as an instrument and endodontics as a specialty had a significant relationship with the dental fear.Conclusions: there was a relationship between fear to dental attendance and non-attendance at appointments by adults. An unpleasant experience was an etiological factor to consider fear to the consultation, as well as their perception of other people about the appearance of the patient’s teeth.Objetivo: determinar relación entre el miedo hacia la consulta odontológica y la no asistencia a las citas por parte de los pacientes adultos atendidos en las Clínicas Odontológicas de la Universidad Santo Tomás en Floridablanca (Santander).Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio de corte transversal en el que se encuestaron a 110 pacientes adultos, de ambos géneros que asistían a las clínicas odontológicas desde enero hasta octubre del 2008. Se usó la prueba Chi2 o test exacto de Fisher y se consideró un valor alpha = 0,05.Resultados: el porcentaje de personas que padecían temor hacia la consulta odontológica fue 48,2%. El 55,6% de las mujeres sintieron temor de la consulta odontológica y el 28,2% de la población reportó haber faltado alguna vez a sus citas odontológicas por el temor que esta les genera. La jeringa de anestesia como instrumento y la endodoncia como especialidad presentaron una relación estadísticamente significativa con el miedo a la consulta odontológica.Conclusiones: existe relación entre el miedo a la consulta odontológica y la no asistencia a las citas por parte de los adultos. Haber tenido experiencias previas desagradables se consideró un factor etiológico del miedo hacia la consulta, al igual que la percepción que tenían las demás personas sobre el aspecto de los dientes del paciente.[Mejía LP, Sierra SP.
