Summary: | Objective: to assess the association between some salivary properties and others factors and the presence of dental caries in schoolchildren in the city of Floridablanca Santander. Methods: an analytical cross-sectional observational study was done with 75 students of both genders from 9-11 years old, who attended the Educational Institution of Floridablanca. Simple random sampling was conducted and sociodemographic variables (age, gender, grade was studying, living, working parents, socioeconomic status), variables related to dietary habits, saliva (salivary pH, salivary clearance and salivary flow), dental caries (COPD, presence of non-cavitational dental caries), and oral hygiene (brushing and frequency ICP) were analyzed. It applies the parents informed consent and assent to children for their participation. Then, the data were analyzed with multiple regression model of Poisson. Results: 54.7% of the population were women, the predominant age was 10 years (70.7%), the prevalence of dental caries was 57.3% and the probability of dental caries was 1.65 [CI 95%: 1.00 - 2.70] in person with regular ICP. No statistically significant association between the presence of dental caries, salivary pH and salivary flow was found. Conclusions: an association between dental caries and salivary characteristics are not evident. In relation to the dental plaque, those individuals with a regular ICP have 1.65 times more risk of caries. |
