Description
Summary:This article studies literature from a sociological viewpoint as a social practice. I focus on the case of César Aira and study his early trajectory when he faced various obstacles. The guiding question of the article considers the conditions of possibility for the emergence of his position because this entails the problem of the circumstances that enable defiant practices. One of the ways to study this process is through the analysis of periodicals where Aira publishes articles and reviews since 1981 when his first book is published (Ema, la cautiva, Editorial de Belgrano). I analyze the articles he has published in periodicals and, also, the characteristics of those periodicals, the zones of the field, the circuits they participate in and the agents involved, all of which is part of the literary fact. The archival work enables me to suggest that, during the democratic transition of 1983 in Argentina, the areas open to Aira’s proposal are the marginal zones of the literary field, in contrast to the attention and recognition of numerous and prestigious agents of the field that Aira will receive years later.
