Description
Summary:This research is a narration about my experiences as a adult immigrant student that studies Finnish in Finland. The research question is “How a Colombian immigrant adult student experiences studying Finnish as a second language in Finland?” A secondary research questions is: “What factors have an impact to the experience and how significant is the impact of those factors?” The empirical data is a collection of self-written narratives as well as multimodal pictures that support the analysis of the narratives. The theoretical framework for the analysis is build around the cultural activity theory. Categories with themes are identified as factors that influence the language learning experience. While some of these factors are such that they are included in typical language learning curricula (such as teaching methods), the most significant are such that they are from the surrounding environment and that are not actively managed by teaching institutions. Also, a theoretical contribution is suggested, so that the cultural activity theory is complemented by an additional dimension that analyses the power relations and cultural starting points when people from various backgrounds participate to language learning courses.
