In this internal dynamic of the military forces, the strong influence of the prevailing political environment and the fluctuating game of loyalties in this final phase of the independence process could be verified. Within the stream of new military history, an attempt is made to examine not only recruitment efforts but also high levels of desertion and changing sides that were especially detrimental to the royalist side, which ultimately ended up tipping the balance towards the realist side. Republican side. Finally, the process of replenishing the force is addressed, either through pardon for new recruits.En el marco del Bicentenario de la Independencia de las naciones hispanoamericanas, este artículo analiza el complicado reto de la conservación de la tropa en Venezuela durante la fase de cese al fuego decretado por el armisticio firmado en 1820 en Trujillo. En esta dinámica interna de las fuerzas militares, pudo comprobarse la fuerte influencia del ambiente político imperante y el fluctuante juego de lealtades en esta fase final del proceso independentista. Dentro de la corriente de la nueva historia militar, se intenta examinar no solo los esfuerzos de reclutamiento, sino también los altos niveles de deserción y de cambio de bando que fueron especialmente perjudiciales para el bando realista, lo cual terminó en últimas inclinando la balanza hacia el bando republicano. Por último, se aborda el proceso de reposición del pie de fuerza ya fuera por la vía del indulto o por los nuevos reclutamientos.No marco do Bicentenário da Independência das nações latino-americanas, este artigo analisa o complicado desafio da conservação das tropas na Venezuela durante a fase do cessar-fogo decretado pelo armistício assinado em 1820 em Trujillo. Nessa dinâmica interna das forças militares, pôde-se verificar a forte influência do ambiente político vigente e o jogo flutuante de lealdades nesta fase final do processo de independência. No fluxo da nova história militar, é feita uma tentativa de examinar não apenas os esforços de recrutamento, mas também os altos níveis de deserção e mudança de lados que foram especialmente prejudiciais para o lado monarquista, que acabou derrubando a balança para o lado realista. Lado republicano.
